PUWER 1998 Woodworking Machinery, Training Risk Assessors

This course is designed to be suitable for HSE inspectors, Environmental Health Officers and H&S Consultants

This course would cover all aspects of PUWER 1998 woodworking machinery compliance

On the successful completion of the course the candidates would be able to carry out a full risk assessment in a competent manner

All courses are tailor-made to the company’s requirements

The course consists of five elements

1/ Candidate introduction to the course   

2/ A power point presentation                                                                     

3/ Debate the course                                                                                  

4/ Carry out an on-site inspection under my guidance                                  

5/ Return to base and discuss the findings

1/ The course starts with an informal discussion of the days training and expected outcome                

2/ A power point presentation, which would cover all aspects of a full risk          assessment, which would include : -                       

Woodworking machinery compliance with PUWER 1998                               Is DC braking always requied?

Maximum projection on planers and the merits of tersa blocks

Spindle moulder tooling compliance

The correct guarding required on all machines

Push sticks and jigs

Different types of mushroom buttons

Extraction and design

When interlock is required on doors

The most suitable lighting and problems with existing lighting

Suitable heating systems and mimum temperatures

The problems associated with emergency stop buttons

The correct signage

The correct PPE equipment

Hand and arm vibration risk

My recomended combined lock-off and extraction system for small to medium workshops

Recomended training to be provided by the employer, safe systems of work, certificates of competence

3/ When all the candidates have completed the above section we will debate the course so far and plan the onsite risk assessment

4/ The candidates will carry out the risk assessment in small groups under instruction

5/ The candidates will return to base and discuss the risk assessment carried out, this will be a group discussion to check that every body is working to the same standards

The objectives of the course are a full understanding of Puwer regs and all other regs, relating to woodworking machinery, tooling risk assessment and best practice, and the ability to carry out a full inspection in a competent manner

On completion of the course the candidates will receive a full set of risk assessment inspection manuals and documents and certificate of competence
